State officials and the mainstream media have for many years portrayed California as the nation’s “green leader,” but a new analysis exposing a correlation between oil industry gifts and California lawmakers’ voting records shows a much different California, one heavily influenced by the oil and gas industry.
This report reveals that California legislators received $253,771.98 in 2016 in free trips, dinners, and hotel stays from groups at least partly funded by or affiliated with companies from the oil and gas sector, according to legislators’ financial disclosure forms released last week and analyzed by the Energy and Policy Institute, a pro-clean energy watchdog organization.

Senators opposing fracking moratorium received 14x more money from Big Oil

Five days after a bill calling for a moratorium on fracking in California failed in the State Senate, a non partisan watchdog group revealed that those who voted against the legislation or abstained from voting on it received many times more in campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry than those who supported the bill.

Did California’s Oil Lobby Buy SB 1132?

The Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA), alone, spent $1.4 million during the first three months of 2014.  Senate Bill 1132 called for a seven month moratorium of fracking while the Natural Resources Agency conducted “an independent scientific study” to ascertain what dangers fracking presents to Californians and the environment. When a bill like this is defeated, (tied 16-16, with 8 abstaining) one has to wonder why. Did California’s oil lobby buy SB 1132?

Legislators Decide Efforts to Study Impact of Extraction Technology Not Necessary

image002-300x82California’s State Senate voted against a new bill that would pause fracking until more is known about its impact on water supplies, earthquake faults and other health concerns. The vote came a day after panelists at a San Diego County forum on fracking essentially decided that we have insufficient information about this controversial oil and gas extraction technology and that we need to learn more before giving it public approval.

California Senators Mitchell and Leno introduce Fracking Moratorium Bill

State Senators Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) and Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) have introduced legislation that would impose a moratorium on fracking and acidization in order to protect California’s air and water from pollution caused by this dangerous form of oil and gas extraction.
