It was billed an an AGM like none other. Close to two hundred people attended at least one of the three events, a significant turnout on a rural island like Cortes. Some went to the thank-you party/potluck for volunteers on May 26, in Whaletown. The biggest crowd gathered in the Klahoose Multipurpose Building in Squirrel Cove, for the official launch of Deep Root’s second season. The grand finale was CKTZ’s 2018 AGM on June 3 at Manson’s Hall.
Phil Allen became a DJ back in the years that Cortes Community radio was a pirate station. He likes to find new music and share it with others. Phil jokes that his show is the one man and his dog show. It can feel very lonely, being in the DJ booth by himself speaking into a microphone. You don’t know if anyone is actually listening until someone comments about your show. So why does he do it? What is the Story Behind Phil’s Pick ’n Mix?
Cortes Island, January 31, 2018 – Cortes Radio reached a significant milestone this month. The station was created to broadcast the concerns, activities and talents of the Northern Gulf Islands to the general public. According to our license, most of our content is supposed to be produced locally (whether it is a DJ broadcasting his musical choices, local music or a local talk show). Up until recently, the station has not been able broadcast the required quota. As of January 2018, CKTZ broadcasts 100 hours of local content every week.
