British Columbia’s Fight For Sustainable Logging

The ECOreport interviews the producer of two short films about British Columbia’s fight for sustainable logging

By Roy L Hales

When Island Timberlands arrived in 2012, they found Cortes island residents waiting behind a blockade. The Vancouver Observer sent a young film maker to cover the story, but Daniel Pierce found more than just another clash between a logging company and local environmentalists. He is still documenting British Columbia’s fight for sustainable logging.

NDP’s Economic Record FAR Better Than BC Liberals

The ECOreport reposts an OP=ED, the NDP’s Economic Record FAR Better Than BC Liberals

Many people are ready for a change in Victoria. Christy Clark is one of the least popular candidates for premier in BC history and, after 16 years of scandal-filled rule, her Liberal Party has tried British Columbians’ patience to the extreme. Yet every day on social media, I run across a familiar refrain: “Better than going back to the NDP’s lost decade.” Clearly, that narrative is so deeply embedded that it threatens to keep the NDP out of government yet again.

Christy Clark’s Liberals Attack Vancouver’s Attempt To Limit Emissions

The ECOreport looks into why Christy Clark’s Liberals attack Vancouver’s attempt to limit emissions

By Roy L Hales

The future of Vancouver’s new Green Building Rezoning Policy is already uncertain. As of this morning, there is an emissions cap on all new construction and buildings applying for rezoning. There are several ways developers “can meet the energy efficiency and emissions targets (50 per cent decrease in GHGs).” They can use “better insulation, thicker windows, and better design, as well as opting for renewable energy.” However the largest cause of the city’s emissions is natural gas and so  Premier Christy Clark’s Liberals attack Vancouver’s attempt to limit emissions.

Asking A Liberal Candidate Tough Questions

The ECOreport publishes more of its’ interview with Dallas Smith, asking a Liberal candidate tough questions.

By Roy L Hales

One of the principle movers behind the agreement to save the Great Bear Rainforest is running as a Liberal candidate in North Island riding. Dallas Smith hopes to bring more local accountability into the political process. There is not enough time to broadcast the entirety of our interview. Aside from a short exchange about Site C, last week’s broadcast was essentially a puff piece. In this segment, I am asking a Liberal candidate tough questions.

Clues As To Who Might Win BC’s Election

The ECOreport examines the data for three clues as to who might win BC’s election

By Roy L Hales

A little over a month ago, the BC Government delivered its’ preelection budget. It was a cynical exercise in pre-election spin, which resulted in a prompt drop in their standings in the polls. The New Democratic Party (NDP) has been at the top of every poll that Mainstreet Research has conducted since then, but here are three clues as to who will win the BC election.

With British Columbia’s provincial election approaching, I decided to interview the candidates in my riding. Dallas Smith, who is attempting to capture this seat for the BC Liberals, has yet to respond to my emails. Green candidate Sue Moen and I will be talking soon. My conversation with Claire Trevena, MLA for Island North, took place on a bench overlooking the wharves at Heriot Bay, on Quadra Island.

This week’s surprise is that the BC Greens have gained 4 percentage points in terms of decided and leaning voters.
