Solar technology was invented in the USA. It was originally intended  for satellite communications and later utilized for terrestrial applications . In 1978 Dr Allan Hoffman presented President Jimmy Carter with a plan that could have let America obtain 10% of its energy from solar power by 2000. 175 senior government officials, from 30 government departments, helped prepare it. The US did not move forward with this initiative and, after a quarter of a century’s delay, Japan and Germany took leadership of the Solar Revolution. Dr Hoffman explains what held the nation back 36 years ago and what is hindering solar development today.
