U.S. Forest Service Increases its Firefighting Aircraft Fleet as Fire Season Begins

WASHINGTON, May 20, 2014 – In the face of what is shaping up to be a catastrophic fire season in the Southwest, the U.S. Forest Service is adding four additional aircraft to its next-generation firefighting fleet, bringing the total amount of aircraft to 21 large airtankers (with opportunities to add additional aircraft, if needed) and more than 100 helicopters. The new aircraft will enter service in the coming weeks and support over 10,000 firefighters for the 2014 wildfire season.

The Loan Programs Office’s Accomplishment

The amount of capacity number of installations have grown from a mere 45 MW, in 2003, to 4,751 MW in 2013. As Rhone Resch, President and CEO of Solar Energy Industrieys  Association (SEIA) puts it, solar energy is now mainstream. More than half of those installations was from ere utility scale solar projects that probably would not have come into being were not for the Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office (LPO).

EPA moves to protect Bristol Bay fishery from Pebble Mine

(Washington, D.C.—Feb. 28, 2014) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is initiating a process under the Clean Water Act to identify appropriate options to protect the world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery in Bristol Bay, Alaska from the potentially destructive impacts of the proposed Pebble Mine. The Pebble Mine has the potential to be one of the largest open pit copper mines ever developed and could threaten a salmon resource rare in its quality and productivity. During this process, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers cannot approve a permit for the mine.
