This is one of the windiest places in Southern California and also one of the state’s largest wind sitings. It is not clear whether “NewWiseGuy”  made this video, or just posted it. The addition of Kermit the Frog singing “Its not easy Being Green” softens the harsh impact of scenes reminiscent of a battlefield.

San Diego: Wind Turbine Catches Fire in Campo

Screen shot 2014-03-18 at 3.43.47 PMA wind turbine exploded on the Campo Indian Reservation, in San Diego’s East County, around noon on December 16. Flames spread to the surrounding bush. Two bombers that responded to the emergency were hampered by high winds. The situation might have got out of control, had a helicopter not arrived. Interview With County Supervisor Dianne Jacob About Renewable Projects In East County

Screen-shot-2014-03-18-at-3.43.47-PM1There has been a great deal of talk about little places like Campo, Boulevard and Ocotillo ever since construction began on the Sunrise Powerlink.  There have been multiple lawsuits as environmentalists, Native Americans and other East County residents have fought to protect their habitat, ancestral lands and homes from the encroaching pace of “development.” As much of this area lies within the East County District represented by County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, I sought her perspective about what is going on.

The Wind Energy Ordinance moves forward, despite opposition from East County

Screen-shot-2014-03-18-at-3.43.47-PM1The Board of Supervisors were unanimous in regard to to the changes affecting small wind turbine development, but East County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said the large turbine ordinance forced changes to her district that were “very wrong.” She was out voted, 4-1.

East County nonprofits seek injunction to halt Tule Wind Project.

March 13, 2013 (Boulevard) – Iberdrola’s Tule Wind project has been slapped with a federal complaint seeking declaratory and injunctive relief. The lawsuit was filed by two nonprofits in San Diego’s Rural East County, the Protect Our Communities Foundation and Backcountry Against Dumps.

Fire Chief warns Industrial scale Renewable Projects in Eastern San Diego County could cause “Catastrophic Fire” (video)

Retired California Fire Battalion Chief Mark Ostrander warned of the fire dangers from the proposed wind and solar projects in San Diego’s East County region in a meeting at the Boulevard Fire Station. He says they could cause a catastrophic wildfire that would grow too large to extinguish, since firefighters can’t battle such a blaze under the blades or from the air. Its especially dangerous in this area, where volunteer firefighters were unable to save homes and a life lost in a recent wildfire with only moderate winds What happens when a Santa Ana wind fuels a fire at a wind farm – or three of them, as are planned here in this region already at the highest risk for wildfires?
