London’s Transportation Sector Going Electric

The ECOreport looks into the first steps towards London’s Transportation Sector Going Electric

A spokesperson from Fastned said negotiations have been going on for the past year and a half. This morning Transport for London (TfL) announced the Dutch EV fast charging company is one of the five successful bidders. The other charging companies are Bluepoint London, the Centrica Consortium, Chargemaster and Electricity Supply Board (ESB).  London’s first 75 charging points should be operational by the end of the year.  By 2020, there could be 300.  The first steps towards London’s transportation sector going electric have been taken.

Fastned’s First German EV Fast Charging Stations

Germany is building out an EV fast charging infrastructure. Two months ago, the European Commission decided “Germany’s scheme to roll out a network of user-friendly infrastructure for charging electric vehicles across the country is in line with EU state aid rules.”  The government will invest €300 million (nearly $320 US) and two-thirds of this is designated to accelerate the development of a fast charging network. The buildout started long before any announcement of Government funding. 292 units were installed last year. Construction of the Dutch company Fastned’s first German EV fast charging stations is about to commence.

Last year, the Dutch fast charging station company needed three weeks to raise EUR 3 million selling share certificates on Nx’change. Now, Fastned raised EUR 2.5 million over the weekend.

The race to build the infrastructure, that can help make them the vehicle of choice, lags behind. Ford Motors, Volkswagen Group, BMW Group and Daimler are entering into the race with joint plans to develop 400 sites by 2020. However Fastned has already built 55 stations through-out the Netherlands and, on December 1, announced the opening of Europe’s First Urban Fast Charging Station in the Hague.

According to Michiel this number includes not only fully electric cars, but also the Hybrids.There are still parts of the country that are beyond the reach of EVs with a 100 kilometers per charge range. Around 85% of the population do not have their own parking spaces.  Yet Fastned’s co- founder & CEO Michiel Langezaal says the EV tipping point will arrive quickly.

Electric cars are booming in the Netherlands

Of all cars sold in the first three quarters of 2014 in the Netherlands, 4.3% were electric or hybrid cars. In the last quarter of 2013, the number was even higher: 15%. The main reason for these very high EV sales in the Netherlands is fiscal measures, says Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, who published the figures.
