Metro Vancouver has long been trucking solid waste to the Cache Creek Landfill. The captured gas was simply flared. Coquitlam based Wastech Services Ltd started exploring other options in 2005, but the project didn’t get underway until the province of British Columbia introduced new gas collection regulations. Starting in 2016, 75% of all landfill methane gas must be captured. Wastech started construction in the summer of 2014 and the new plant has been capturing at least 85% of the methane for the past year. The official opening was June 15. Cache Creek’s Landfill Gas facility is feeding the grid.
